my candy-coated baby

So, yesterday i get a phone call from Jackson's doctors office, letting me know that i needed to bring him in to have his blood drawn for part of the immunization study we are participating in. I made an appointment for 10:00am and promptly texted Danny at work to let him know. I admit i was a little worried about the whole thing, but tried not to show it. we took him in this morning and waited for the nurse to call us back. she took us into a room where she tied a rubber band around Jackson's arm so that she could find the best vein available. she finally decided that his right arm was the best place. then she placed this big sticky clear bandage, with a big glob of numby stuff on it, onto his arm. on top of that she put a diaper that she had soaked in hot water and wrapped it around tightly so to heat up the numbing cream and help it penetrate better. she said for us to wait about 10 min and she would return and finish the blood draw. we waited and waited and after about 20 min she finally showed back up again. after removal of the band-aid and diaper she gave Jackson a little DumDum sucker to distract him. boy did itwork. he loved the sucker. probably because he had never eaten anything like it before! he was in heaven and he didnt even notice that by this time the nurse was poking around in his arm with the needle. only problem was she couldn't find the vein!!
she was just poking and poking and his poor little arm was bleeding, and jackson was none the wiser! after about 5 min of poking around with no success, she decided to move to the other arm, that she didn't numb and try that one. luckily she had some freezing spray to help numb it. again she spent about 5 min fishing around in his tiny little arm. then after that was not successful she wanted to see if she could do it in his hand....after examining that she went back to the first arm and tried a second time.....
now by this time Jackson has pretty much made his way down to the last little bit of the sucker. still no crying or fussing and his face was covered in sticky sucker slobber...but without the yummy candy to keep him happy i started getting worried that she wasn't going to be able to get it done before he finished, which might end up with Jax kicking and screaming. Danny looked over and could tell i was fraught with terror and told me not to look. i calmly looked at the nurse and told her to hurry up or the sucker was going to be gone. after another minute or so she finally got it!!! Hallelujah!!! both of his arms were bleeding so they tried to put cotton balls and band-aids on them both...but it didn't last, they just came right back off.
anyways long story not short, it was traumatizing for me, but Jax was fine with it!

lesson learned:
Jackson really likes DumDum suckers. the end:)
